Students do cutting-edge biotech work
The iGEM contest gives university labs a chance to try out little-explored approaches such as modifying chromatin, said Andrew Horwitz, a post-doctoral student in the Lim lab at UCSF's Mission Bay campus who directed the student team. Such ideas are often too risky for veteran scientists or post-docs, who are under constant pressure to publish solid findings, he said. "A lot of those constraints are lifted," Horwitz said.
