    Last month, Vollen, 44, turned to MyFarm, a new San Francisco business that took the family's local and organic diet to a new level: by designing and planting an organic vegetable garden in their Marina district backyard. The Vollens pay MyFarm a weekly fee to maintain and harvest the vegetables that have just started to mature. They can gaze at their garden and dig into just-picked lettuce without so much as touching dirt.

And bicycles, rather than gas-guzzling trucks, will be the main method of transport.

    BERNAL HEIGHTS, SUNDAY: After three people were shot in broad daylight at Maynard and Congdon streets, two of the gunshot victims died. It seems the men were driving southbound on Congdon Street at 3:10 p.m. yesterday when they encountered another car going northbound on the same street. A suspect in the second car then fired, shot three and killed two, and fled. No arrests have been made.

    As an interesting aside, I visited the Mission Bay library branch yesterday to skim the latest San Francisco Business Times and read that Menlo Park-based Sequoia Capital has agreed to lease the top floor of the new office building at 555 Mission Street in Rincon Hill. The primary appeal of the building is that the building is an environmentally friendly development.

  • Waller St. & Stanyan St. Skateboard Club Gets Artsy for a Good Cause

    The S.F. Skate Club, a youth skateboarding program dedicated to providing children with skateboarding lessons and mentoring, hosted an art show last Friday in Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi’s office at City Hall. The show featured a series of hand-painted skateboard decks by local youth skateboarders, ages 8 to 13. Although none of the artwork was for sale, the club was hoping the show would help raise awareness about the need for a skateboard park in Golden Gate Park, near Stanyan and Waller streets.

    San Francisco currently has one skate park, which is basically an empty swimming pool in a remote corner of Crocker-Amazon Park. Built in 2001; the park is rarely ever skated because of its old-fashioned design and out-of-the-way location.     Edgewood, the San Francisco residential treatment facility for severely disturbed children, will keep its doors open to city kids for at least another year after receiving enough city and private money. Leaders of the 157-year-old facility had threatened to accept only children from other counties unless San Francisco ponied up $661,000 in the 2008-09 fiscal year.

    On Monday morning at California Street and Van Ness Avenue, tourists stood and studied the tall photographic display that trumpets San Francisco's cable cars. The pictorial lauds the ingenuity and colorful history of the transportation system, but the ticket machine that's inches away is broken and defaced with graffiti and street stickers, one of which advertises "counterfeit sneakers ... only $49.95." Apparently, the machine hasn't worked for years.

  • Congdon Street and Maynard Street Third victim of S.F. shooting dies

    A third victim has died from a shooting in San Francisco's Excelsior district, police said today. The shooting happened about 3:05 p.m. Sunday when a group of men in a car traveling north on Congdon Street approached three men in a car that was going in the opposite direction. Someone opened fire, hitting all three men in the car that was traveling south near Maynard Street, police said.

  • Edgewood Treatment site to continue to accept severely disturbed S.F. children

    Edgewood, the San Francisco residential treatment facility for severely disturbed children, will keep its doors open to city kids for at least another year after receiving enough city and private money. Leaders of the 157-year-old facility had threatened to accept only children from other counties unless San Francisco ponied up $661,000 in the 2008-09 fiscal year.

  • Egyptian consulate Man gets probation for threats against Egyptian consulate workers

    A man was sentenced today to one year of probation for threatening to kill a member of the Egyptian consulate in San Francisco. On Feb. 11, Fredrick Green rattled the gates of the consulate in the city's Marina district and threatened to kill a consulate employee and family members after being denied access, a Diplomatic Security Service special agent wrote in an affidavit.
