From Sand Hill To San Francisco: The Reverse VC Commute Continues
“Menlo Park-based Sequoia Capital, one of Silicon Valley's most successful venture capital firms, has agreed to lease the top floor of the office tower Tishman Speyer is building at 555 Mission St., a significant coup for San Francisco's first speculative office tower built in six years….If completed, the deal would be the third major tenant Tishman has landed at 555 Mission St. at a time when the city's commercial real estate market has cooled considerably.”

One Expensive One-Bedroom In A Beaux Arts Building We Love
We’ve always loved the William Randolph Hearst built Beaux Arts building at 1001 California Street, both in terms of location and style. And granted, unit #8 is a large one-bedroom (1500 square feet) with terraces, a “wine cellar,” and “views for miles.”

Our thoughts on the listing for 1083 Hollister seventeen months ago (listed for $499,000 at the time). A take-charge (which we love) reader’s survey of the property and location soon thereafter. And the “newly renovated” listing today (asking $688,000).

Valencia St. & 16th St.
New to the Area? Neighborhood Spotlight: Noe Valley, The Mission and The Castro
Continue heading east to wind deeper into the Mission. Valencia Street sometimes referred to as the Trans-Mission Corridor shows of the neighborhood’s artsy independent side with cafes, coffeeshops, restaurants and bars that cater to hip and ethnically diverse young clientele. The most bustling area is around the intersection of 16th and Valencia streets, with chic restaurants like Limon and Ti Couz, and unique storefronts continue all the way down Valencia to 24th.

New to the Area? Neighborhood Spotlight: Noe Valley, The Mission and The Castro
If the rundown Victorians in the Mission are the “before” picture, the shining beauties of the Castro are the “after.” First-class taste and a profusion of discretionary income have meant good things for this leafy residential zone. Approximately 85% of the Castro’s residents are gay, lesbian or transgender and the neighborhood is a mecca for gay tourists from around the world. The corner of 18th and Castro has been dubbed the gayest spot in the world and it was from there the community leaders organized their neighbors as political force in the 1970’s.

BART mug suggestion may whet commuter support
After doing her best to wipe up the water that had puddled near the bottom of the escalator at the Glen Park Station in San Francisco, Sweet filled the plastic travel mug with water once more, made sure the lid was on tight, intentionally dropped the cup on the floor as she did before, "and it still didn't spill," Sweet said with relief.

Lake Merced
S.F.: Volunteer cleanup on Sunset Blvd.
It's one of the longest stretches of green space in San Francisco, a corridor of almost 20 blocks that connects Lake Merced to Golden Gate Park, but mention "Sunset Boulevard" to people in the city, and they're just as likely to think of the famous Los Angeles thoroughfare that cuts through Beverly Hills. L.A.'s and S.F.'s Sunset Boulevards have two things in common: They're usually traversed by motor vehicle, and they can be rough around the edges.

S.F.: Volunteer cleanup on Sunset Blvd.
Saturday's volunteers will help restore the boulevard's running path (which is now overgrown with grass), weed and do other landscaping. Volunteers will meet at Noreiga Street and 37th Avenue - about the half-way point of the boulevard. From there, they'll fan out in both directions, getting a little dirty but none the worse for the wear.

Iron Alley
S.F.: No exit from staircase anytime soon
Closed S.F. staircase: Some of the wooden steps at Iron Alley creak from old age, but they still work, despite the prominent white sign that reads "Steps Closed - No Exit." The sign brings to mind the famous Jean-Paul Sartre play about people trapped in a room, and in the case of Iron Alley, those who ignore the sign and ascend the stairs find a locked, chain-link fence. No exit indeed.
