  • Castro and Market S.F.: Faulty street signs in Castro

Phantom warning: Old pipes corrode. Old pipes can snap in a strong earthquake. Which is why Pacific Gas and Electric Co. has replaced underground piping throughout San Francisco, including the intersection of Castro and Market streets near the Castro Theatre. The only problem: At the fabled Castro intersection, PG&E repaved the street but forgot to completely redo the "No Left Turn" lettering that once was there. For four months, drivers going north through the intersection have seen just the word "NU." (The top of the letter "O" was blacked out with new asphalt.) Castro resident Tony Jasinski, who alerted ChronicleWatch about the missing words, said he has seen cars try to make an illegal left-hand turn onto busy Market Street. "It's a hazardous situation," he said.

In our normal work flow, the contractor puts down temporary lettering on the street, and we immediately notify the city that the road sign needs to be repainted permanently." Jasinski pointed out another PG&E paving/lettering miscue in the Castro - this one at 20th and Collingwood streets, where the warning to "STOP" had been reduced to "S." That will also be fixed by Monday night, Molica said. "We apologize to the residents of the Castro neighborhood for the delay," he said. PG&E's pipeline work is ongoing. As Molica said, "We're upgrading our gas pipelines as part of a citywide project to make them far more resistant to earthquake and corrosion."
