A woman was killed Monday at San Francisco's Stern Grove when gusty wind apparently caused a a portion of an old redwood tree to fall on her, park officials and the coroner's office said.

Police investigating eight robberies of Chinese women in Chinatown between March 11 and Thursday arrested city resident Jimmy Situ, 33, the Police Department reported. Situ allegedly approached the women in eight separate incidents and tore off their gold or jade necklaces before fleeing, police said.

Also on Thursday, police arrested two 17-year-olds suspected in a series of armed robberies in the city's Potrero Hill neighborhood. The suspects allegedly robbed pedestrians who were walking late at night at gunpoint, police said. Two robberies were carried out April 6 and two on Tuesday, according to police. Police allegedly recovered a firearm from the suspects. link

Chocoholics stormed Fort Mason Sunday for a slice of the San Francisco International Chocolate Salon. Smart parents bought their wee ones (kids under 6 got in free), but everyone who paid the $20 entrance fee -well, at least those who arrived before 2 p.m. when we headed out- got their money's worth.

Haight Soup Kitchen Closes Shop
Over the weekend, the Chronicle informed me that the Haight-Ashbury Food Program that sits a few blocks away from my Waller Street sublet closed its doors on Friday, with volunteers emptying out the pantry and handing out lists of other food kitchens to the hungry instead of hot bowls of soup.

If they agree to pay a $1,000 fee and spend a Saturday afternoon listening to sex-trafficking experts, neighborhood activists and doctors who subject them to photographs of venereal diseases, the district attorney's office will drop the misdemeanor charge.
