About excavation permits

Summary

From waking you up in the morning to changing your transit patterns, excavation work in your neighborhood can have a major effect on your life. In this section of EveryBlock, we provide you with information about recent excavation permits from the San Francisco Department of Public Works, so you can find out about excavation work near you.

Permits are issued for work to do such things as adding new gas service or installing new sidewalk curb ramps. The permits are most commonly needed to repair leaking service lines.

Those details are available in each permit report, along with the location of the work, the date the permit is effective, the date the permit expires, the permit number and the utility contractor — the utility or municipal agency that received the permit. This last group includes Pacific Gas & Electric, the San Francisco Water Department, Comcast Cable Corp., and many others.

Permits aren't needed when work can be completed in 24 hours or less — e.g., for installation of a parking meter, street light, street tree, traffic sign, traffic signal or utility pole, or repair of a utility box in a sidewalk.

Please note that one permit number can cover work at multiple locations. In these instances, we show all locations under one permit number.
